68th Annual Salem Art Fair & Festival
July 21-23, 2017
The Salem Art Association is thrilled to announce that Lee White, an illustrator from Portland, Oregon, has been selected as the Poster Artist for the 68th Annual Salem Art Fair & Festival, happening July 21-23 in Salem, Oregon. Lee’s original artwork, titled Sussuro, was created for the event and will be reproduced onto a limited run of commemorative posters, t-shirts and other memorabilia. The piece is an ode to Owl Capone, the infamously ill-tempered resident of Bush’s Pasture Park who prompted the City of Salem to put up owl attack signs. Selected from a pool of previous Art Fair artists by a jury, Lee will also be returning to the Artist Marketplace for the third year. When asked about his inspiration for the piece, Lee replied:
“The image I’m making about the owls is based on the sign that is in the park. The signs make the owls seem so aggressive (maybe they are!). So I thought I would focus on coming up with a “Patron Saint of Owls” that can soothe them and make them more docile. It’s a fun, creative process and I’m excited to share it with everyone.”
Lee spends his days breathing life into his imaginary world. He works primarily in watercolor, but likes to include all sorts of media, such as ink, colored pencil and collage. He has illustrated a number of children’s books, including What Are You Glad About? What Are You Mad About? and The Lost Track of Time. His latest, Emma and the Whale, will be released in March 2017. White has also done commercial work for various clients, including Marks & Spencer, Amazon, Laika, United Airlines, Verizon, Disney, and
National Geographic. He is represented by Rodeen Literary Management, and Spinning Yarn Illustration Agency. Lee also shows his personal work in various galleries and at art fairs. He received his MFA from University of Hartford, and a bachelors from ArtCenter College of Design.
