The Annex Artist-in-Residence Program Description

Salem Art Association’s (SAA) Community Arts Education program hosts a year-round Artist-in-Residence (AIR) at the Annex. This program aims to serve professional artists by providing a flexible space for artistic development.

While not the primary focus of the AIR, SAA asks that each artist engage with our local community in some way during the residency. Please include in your proposal which areas might be of interest to you.

Type of Facility

Founded in 1919 in Salem, Oregon, the Salem Art Association is a 501c3 non-profit arts organization which has served the mid-Willamette valley for nearly 100 years and is one of the largest community arts organizations in Oregon. The Annex, which hosts the AIR, is located in picturesque Bush’s Pasture Park, conveniently situated just outside downtown Salem.

Who Can Apply

All artists, including literary, visual, and performing artists.  Please submit a description of a clearly defined project.  SAA may or may not consider artists particularly complementary to an occurring SAA exhibit.

Dates of Operation

SAA is open year-round.


SAA is located in the beautiful Bush’s Pasture Park in downtown Salem, Oregon.


With a strong tradition of artistic excellence since 1919, the Salem Art Association enriches the cultural fabric of our community. From contemporary art exhibits at Bush Barn Art Center, decorative and historic art at the Bush House Museum, public cultural programs and school programs to the annual Salem Art Fair & Festival, SAA’s many activities foster creativity and appreciation for the arts in our local community.

 Facility Description

Studio space is located in the Art Annex, a space adjacent to the main building which is the renovated barn of the Bush family. Historical Bush House is located across the parking lot from both buildings.

SAA’s Art Annex is (est.) 630 square feet, with a loft at (est.) 300 square feet.

Several eight foot tables, easels, small refrigerator, sink and storage space, are on site.

There is a printmaking press on site, currently installed in an enclosed room.

SAA strives to maintain a non-toxic environment and is committed to physical and bodily health and safety. Please provide a list of any chemical materials, tools or potentially hazardous materials you may use and how materials will be safely disposed of. A solvent garbage can will be provided. Ventilation is provided by windows and doors only.

Length of each residency may vary from four to six weeks. Please state specific dates of preference.

Approximate Cost to Artist

Transportation, meals, materials, and incidentals are costs to artists.

Housing is not provided.

Salem Art Association currently has a minimal budget to support this program.
