OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY JANUARY 9, 5:30-7:30 P.M. WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS, 6:00 P.M.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Roz Will grew up in Medford, Oregon. In the mid-1960s he attended the University of Oregon, where he honed his skills in the Journalism Department studying photography with Bernie Fremesser. Photography at Oregon describes Fremesser as inspiring a generation of young photographers.

His pioneering work in photography education, combined with his achievements as a photographer helped to establish photography’s rightful place in the [university’s] fine arts curriculum. Bernie’s program brought a continuing stream of major artists and photographers to the campus, and drew in photography students from all over the U.S.

After graduation, Will served 4 years in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot, then continued training as a commercial pilot. In the mid-1970s he completed a Masters in Education, at Southern Oregon College, now Southern Oregon University. Later he moved to Burns, with his wife Nancy, where he taught at Burns Union High School until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career, Roz Will has had a number of photography businesses including TML Photo, Pro-Shot Photo, Flat Hat Photo, and Roz Will Photo.

Describing his own photographic images, Will notes:

It is VERY difficult to know the photo work of others, and not be imitative, to bring some originality to what you see in the world around.

My favorite images are those created by a selective process, whether that be in the initial exposure or in post-processing, in which the forms of the natural world are captured to form an “original” image which is in itself pleasing. I especially enjoy it when the viewer has difficulty determining the original subject.

Which is to say, most, or at least many, of these images are “abstractions”, from the real world.
