MY OWN FLAG TO RAISE | JESSICA REHFIELD

MY OWN FLAG TO RAISE | JESSICA REHFIELD

EXHIBITION | OCTOBER 6 – NOVEMBER 5 | FOCUS GALLERY | RECEPTION OCTOBER 8, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Drawing on the aesthetics of classic 90’s zines and mix-tape culture, Jessica Rehfield’s work in My Own Flag to Raise draws symbols of hierarchy and oppression into conversation with queer craft, creativity and liberation. In creating a giant, multi-identity Pride flag, Rehfield pulls queer identities forward in opposition to nationalistic efforts to suppress non-dominant and queer voices, and questions whose identities are given representation, where, and why. A multi-identity flag will be constructed on the floor of the Annex with publication of a zine featuring the work of 10 queer artists alongside. The public is invited to visit the workspace where they can interact with the work in progress and ask questions of the artist. The final flag will be exhibited in the Focus Gallery in October with the original zine artwork and the zine, which will also become part of Salem Art Association’s permanent zine library. A playlist formed by the artist during residency activities will be available for sharing via the zine as a QR code.
