DENTALIUM EARRING WORKSHOP WITH NAKOOSA MORELAND

The Salem Art Association is excited to welcome visiting Indigenous Art Co-Teachers-in-Residence from Chemeketa Community College, Nakoosa Jack and Nakeezaka Jack 

Dentalium earring workshop with Nakoosa Moreland on Saturday, February 22, 2025

Doors open at 10:45 and the workshop will run from 11:00 p.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Nakoosa Moreland (Jack) is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. She is a descendant of Chief Bogus of the Rogue River Umpquas. She is a master beadwork artist, jingle dress dancer and entrepreneur. She has been making jewelry for more than 20 years and was taught by her Mother Cecile Kneeland.

Dentalium earring kits will be pre-made, the workshop should only take about an hour to complete earrings, beginners are welcome and encouraged. Dentalium was used as a form of currency for Native Americans along the coast and is still widely used today among different native tribes to show wealth, status and lineage. 

Nakoosa Moreland is an artist, dancer, entrepreneur and mom. She attended Chemawa Indian school and attended Western Oregon University with a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling. She works part time at Chemeketa Community college as a co-teacher in residence. She helps teach students how to learn the basic skills of bead work and will be pursuing more opportunities in art in the future. 

Materials for the workshop are $40. Please sign up here and pay the $40 material fee via Venmo or bring cash to the workshop.
