Directors Artistic Statement

Vulnerability is at the heart of artistic creation and at the root of complex learning. I think the most important truth about making and directing theater is that the director/teacher/leader/mentor must also willingly and bravely step into the arena of vulnerability. Over and over, every time. The truthful experience cannot be presented under false pretenses – it must be genuine for the best artistic and learning outcomes to flourish.

Collaboration is part of that vulnerability. It is a difficult and indistinct goal – but one that I am committed to at every step of the theater-making process. I believe we must be taught to collaborate. We learn from an early age to cooperate, but this is not the same process and does not produce the same result as collaboration. Trusting a level of messiness in the process is an artistic free-fall for many directors, but this is part of what leads to the very best outcomes in product and personal growth. I am committed to using these skills in all steps of theater making.
